about

[commentary track]Elliott Forbes was a character who was part of the Mom and Dad show. He was billed as an “eminent hygienist” and while he would sometimes do radio interviews and make appearances, his main function was to lecture about sexual hygiene. During the final quarter of the film—more specifically, right before the birth scene—the movie would stop, the lights would come up, and Forbes would take the stage to talk.

The lectures would quickly turn into a sales pitch for books: “Mother and Daughter” for the ladies, “Husband and Son” for the gentlemen, $1 each, $2 for the set! “Nurses” would walk through the audience collecting money and distributing the books. And when everyone was served, the lights would dim and the controversial birth scene was shown. The film wraps up about ten minutes later.

While it has been reported these pitchmen loved their jobs (they kept all the money from the book sales), this song is about the one at the failing New York show as he wonders if maybe this isn’t for him.

lyrics

My cue: just before the private part. My cue: just before the private part.

I've done this a hundred times, a million times before. I've done this a hundred towns, a million towns before.

The nurses will back me up as I take center stage. Reciting the lines exactly as written on the page.

But I'm not really here, I don't exist at all. There's a couple dozen more of me across the state.

I traded my name for the spotlight and the fame of the road. But the smell of stale popcorn won't come out my hair.

Who needs identity? It's just a job. So get back to work. Get back to work. Get back to work.
